Bisnaga: A Legacy Etched in Stone

Vijayanagara was a thriving metropolis in the Medieval Deccan with a highly cosmopolitan culture.

The period around which the Kingdom of Vijayanagara came in to being was wrought with battles and bloodshed, and in this backdrop, the Rayas of Vijayanagara maintained a highly secular, tolerant and sophisticated capital at Vijayanagara where all kinds of trades and commercial activities thrived and people from all walks of lives from lands as far as Khurasan in Central Asia and Portugal in Europe received patronage. In various eyewitness accounts the city is mentioned as Vidyanagara, Bisnaga, Bisnagelia etc. The present graphic novel is a result of a multi-disciplinary study undertaken by the author. The product in hand, reached its culmination after rigorous archaeological explorations and surveys of monuments not just at Hampi but even other sites like Raichur, Chandragiri, Penukonda, and Lepakshi. The author documented and studied all the sculptures on the monuments of Vijayanagara like the temples, forts and the platforms. Lastly, the author reviewed primary written documents such as the Chronicas dos Reis de Biznaga, Amuktamalyada and the Book of Duarte Barboza. Through various visuals and content in this novel, the author has hinted towards all the latest research that has been done on Vijayanagara till present and the author and the illustrators have tried to use actual sculptural references for the visuals wherever possible. Author Kush is a PhD in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology from Deccan College Pune. He started his career in the K-12 education space as a teaching fellow with Teach For India in 2011 where he taught 29 students in Seelampur and then went on to teach in Pune and Bangalore. Illustrator Kamaljit is a self taught illustrator and a video editor. He designed the cover and the book as well.
